I love to make soft little toys. It is such fun! Today I will share with you my rainy day project “Reindeer Toy”.
It is a baby reindeer with a very big head and small body. This amigurumi crocheted toy is absolutely adorable! You can make it yourself for your child or use it as a home decor around Christmas time.
I used 3 mm hook and 4 ply baby yarn. I crochet this toy in one peace, it is not require assembling.
CH – chain, ST – stitch, SC – single crochet, RND – round, SLST – slip stitch
(X) – a number in brackets at the end of each row is the total number of stitches in that particular row.
Always use a smaller hook than recommended for a tighter knit.
I will crochet the head from the nose.
Start with 6 stitches in magic loop. This will be the end of the nose.
1st row – increase, SC 2 stitches out of each one of 6, you will end up with 12 stitches, (12),
Mark beginning of the row for your reference. This will help you to count your rows because for this project you will need to crochet spirally, without making a chain for the next row.
2nd row – increase, SC 2 stitches out of every 2nd, you will end up with 18 stitches, (18),
3rd row – inc, 2SC out of every 3rd, (24),
4th row – inc, 2SC out of every 4th, (30),
5th row – inc, 2SC out of every 5th, (36),
6th row – inc, 2SC out of every 6th, (42),
7th row – inc, 2SC out of each 7th, (49),
8-12 rows – crochet 5 rows RND, (49),
Change yarn colour now.
13-14 rows – crochet 2SC rows around, (49),
15th row – decrease, crochet together every 6th and 7th ST, (41),
To avoid holes around the body in decreasing points, I do it like that:
16th row – crochet RND, (41),
17th row – dec, every 5th and 6th together, (34),
18th row – crochet RND, (34),
19th row – dec, every 4th and 5th together, (27),
Keep moving your marker for the beginning of the row. This will help you to stay on track. Spiral crochet work is twisting as you go along,
this always confuses me if I forget to move my marker. Have to do then lots of counting. 🙂
20-24 rows – crochet 5 rows RND, (27),
At this point, I am going to make ears.
25th row – crochet 5 SC out of one ST, crochet 10 SC, 5 out of one, SC rest 15, (27),
Now I will work on the left ear, at this point, I have 5 stitches dedicated to it.
1st row – SC 2 stitches, inc 3 SC out of 1 ST, SC 2 stitches, (7),
turn your work to the wrong side,
2nd row – CH 1, SC 2, inc 3 SC out of 1, SC 3,(9), turn on the right side,
3rd row – CH 1, SC 3, inc 3 SC out of 1, SC 4, (11), turn on the wrong side,
4th row – CH 1, SC 4, inc 3 SC out of 1, SC 5, (13),
I have finished now with the left ear. You will see on the picture the diamond shape ear, which I will fold in half and crochet together the edges. It will need 3 CS.
The first ear is done just little more work left!
Move to the right ear, single crochet 10 stitches between the ears and repeat rows 1 to 4 from the left ear instruction.
5th row – after you have finished the right ear and stitched it together, turn your work to the wrong side and single crochet 10 stitches to the first ear. Give to the reindeer a little of a forehead.
Now, move to the 26th row.
26th row – crochet single stitches round, (27),
27th row – make sure your row starts from the ear, if not, then single crochet all way to the first ear before you continue.
Making two slots for the antlers a hole for the neck, SC 1, CH 3, 2SC in 4th and 5th stitch from the hook, CH 3, SC 1 (this single crochet should be right next to the other ear), SC 5, CH 7, SC 5, (27 stitches all together),
A schema for 26 and 27th row:
28-29th rows – two rows crochet RND, (27),
At this point,
if you like, you can embroider snout and eyes, insert safety eyes if using and stuff head firmly.
30th row – decreasing, crochet together every 4th and 5th ST, (22),
31st row – decreasing, crochet together every 3rd and 4th ST, (17),
32nd row – decreasing, crochet together every 2nd and 3rd ST, (12),
33rd row – decreasing, crochet together every pair of stitches. You should have left 6 stitches. Finish off and hide the end of yarn.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
1st row – cast on 20 ST around the neck hole with grey yarn, (20),
2-6th row – crochet five rows round, (20),
At this point, finish stuffing the head and change the yarn colour to red or the other colour of your choice.
7-8th rows – two rows crochet round, (20),
Now it is a good moment to make the armholes. I made the same way as I made the neck and antlers holes.
Don’t forget to look for an appropriate place for arms. I inlined mine with ears.
9th row – SC 6, CH 4, SC 6, CH 4, (20),
10-15th rows – crochet five rows round, (20).
Stuff the body and move on to legs.
1st row of one leg (16th row of the body) – SC 10, CH2, insert hook into the 11th stitch from hook, (12),
2nd row – SC 12, (12),
Crochet spirally another 15 rows and change the yarn back to grey coloured.
Crochet spirally another 5 rows and start decreasing.
24th row – SC every pair of stitches together, (6),
Finish off and hide the end of yarn.
Now, cast on 12 stitches around the leg hole and repeat the process for the second leg.
WOW! Well done! Nearly there, keep going!
Cast on 10 stitches around the armholes. Keep crocheting in the same way as you did the legs.
Cast on 8 stitches around antlers holes and crochet RND five rows.
6th row – SC 3, CH 2, insert hook in 5th stitch from the hook, (5),
7-10th row – crochet RND three rows, (5),
decrease by crocheting together every pair of stitches, finish off and hide the end of yarn.
To finish the antler, return to the row 6 and cast on 6 stitches around the hole.
Crochet RND four rows and finish off.
You are DONE!
PS: I didn’t stuff legs, arm, and antlers. You can do if you wish!
