How to knit perfect mittens or finger-less gloves

Keep your hands warm with my easy to knit fingerless gloves knitting pattern. It is the perfect time of the year to wear them. I find fingerless mittens is an indispensable item during winter months. The best thing about them is that you don’t have to take them off if you need to use your fingers to pay for a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. 🙂

Being through my cupboards recently, I’ve found a treasure, the notes on how to knit perfect gloves. Just in time for the cold season!!! It was the pattern I wrote when I was a child, it was like a souvenir from the last century.

I have adapted this pattern and you can follow my easy steps to knit a pair for yourself.

Finger-less gloves knitting pattern

Description

I used five 2mm (US size 0) knitting needles, 50 g of 4 ply baby yarn.

You will need 60-70 grams of yarn if you would like to knit full gloves with 5 fingers.

This pattern is for the Large size gloves. Throughout the description, shown in brackets, I added the number of stitches for the small to medium size gloves.

Tension for stocking stitch

2.5 stitches in one cm

How to knit

  • Cast on 48 stitches for large size or 40 stitches for small to medium size.
  • Divide stitches between four needles 12(10) each and knit using your fifth needle.
  • Work 1×1 rib (1 knit, 1 purl) next 15-20 rows, about 4-5 cm.
  • Work in stocking stitch next 2.5-3 cm and start to increase for your thumb

Add pretty pattern

If you like to add a pretty pattern to your glove, do it on the needles #1 and #2.

I used this pattern on my mittens.

You can use 24(20) stitches from needles #1 and #2 to create a lovely pattern on your mittens or gloves. I used 18 (3 rapports) stitches on needle #1  for small to medium size gloves.

For the left glove, I am going to use needle #4 (#3 for the right glove).

Overall, I am going to add 8 stitches, 2 in every row four times with 5 rows between every increase.

First increase

  • Needle #1 and #2 – work through your pattern,
  • Needle #3 – knit 12(10) stitches,
  • Needle #4 – knit 5(3) st, yarn over, knit 4 st, yarn over, knit 3(3),

Work through the next two rows and move 14(12) stitches from needle #4 on the pin. To pick your 14(12) stitches, count 7(6) each side from the middle of 4 thumb stitches. Cast on 6(6) stitches on the right needle.

Finishing easy mittens

Are you going for the fingerless mittens?

Great! ONLY 30 minutes left until the finish!

Try it on and see how much longer you want it. Work desired length, last 2 cm knit without a pattern and cast off.

Thumb

To finish thumb, you need to move 14(12) stitches from pin to two needles, with third needle cast on further 6 (6) stitches (pull them out from the ones you cast on earlier when you move 14(12) stitches on the pin) to complete the circle and knit the required length with fourth needle. Cast off now!

Congratulation!
